Chris Jones heads for goal against Middlesbrough

Happy 61st Birthday today to Jersey-born former England Under-21 and Spurs striker Chris Jones who played for us between 1973 and 1982, a period where I was a regular at The Lane.

Jones joined Spurs as an apprentice in May 1973 and played 185 matches including 19 substitute appearances, scoring 42 goals in all competitions. He won promotion back into League One with us in 1978 after being relegated the previous season. We sold him to Manchester City in September 1982 for £110,000.

Happy Birthday also to former Spurs winger John Chiedozie. The Nigerian international winger (9 caps) is 57 today. Tottenham paid Notts County £375,000 for him in August 1984. He had an injury disrupted time at Spurs and played 75 matches, including 11 as a substitute, scoring 14 goals in all competitions between 1984 and 1988 until he joined Derby County.

On this day in 1984 former Spurs and Ireland gangly inside-forward Dick Rowley DCM passed away. The son of a British major he received the Distinguished Conduct Medal during his time serving the armed forces. In February 1930 we were a Second Division club and made a bid of £3,750 for him, which the Southampton board found "irresistible".

He spent much of his time at White Hart Lane in the reserves and remained with us until midway through the following season, scoring 10 goals in 24 matches. In December 1931 we sold him to fellow Second Division side Preston North End for £5,000, a tidy profit in those days.
RIP squadron Leader Richard William Morris Rowley.

As you all know by now, 70-year-old Harry Redknapp has taken over as manager of Birmingham City after the resignation if 50-year-old Gianfranco Zola OBE having only been in charge for four months. I for one wish him well.

Former Spurs midfielder 28-year-old Paulinho will not now be deported from China after featuring in a betting company promotion with a Japanese porn star. Poorly advised or just a money grabber?

Today in 1981 Glenn Hoddle made his 200th league appearance for the club. The game was against Norwich City at home and we, unfortunately, lost 3-2. Not the right way to celebrate.
