£6.71m striker with spectacular potential

TRANSFER TALK

Tottenham are interested in the signing of 19-year-old (20 in June) Valencia right winger, although he plays as a striker as well, Rafael "Rafa" Mir.

The youngster stands 1.89 m (6 ft 2 in) tall and our interest is reported in Super Deporte which is a Valencia-based newspaper. That is significant because Valencia and the local press have a very good relationship and directors often come out of meetings and tell local reporters what is happening at the club.

Mir made his top-flight debut against Las Palmas on 28 August, replacing Enzo Pérez for the final four minutes of a 2–4 home loss. He followed that with 1 minute against Eibar and has had minutes in three Cpoa del Rey games.

We were one of a number of teams who spotted him playing in the UEFA Youth League and have been tracking him ever since. The paper say we consider his physical power, speed, individual ability and link play to fit the profile of future player we want to work with.

Like Pau Lopez we want to buy young and nurture in our own style of play for a greater chance of success. Adapting before they become first team players instead of buying a Janssen or Lamela and having to wait for them to adapt.

He is under contract until 30 June 2018 and it is early days for Valencia to be looking to extend that. He contract stipulates that if he plays 5 games of 45 minutes or more with the first team he will be a part of the first team, which means more money and negotiation of another contract, so far he has 3 games under his belt. This would also jump his release clause up from £6.71 million (€8m - AUS$11.44m - US$8.58m) to £25.15 million (€30m - AUS$42.89m - US$32.16m).

Deportivo Valenciano say he has 'truly spectacular potential'. Now there was a story that Daniel Levy has issued an instruction that we were not going to do business with super agent Jorge Mendez (a close friend of owner Peter Lim) anymore, well, he is Mir's agent.

The same outlet suggests he is one of the most potent strikers in Spanish football of his generation, they also quote Director General Mateo Alemany as saying Valencia has no obligation to sell players this summer.
